He will always be associated with magical sporting moments and was a real British Institution. A sad loss but a man who brought a lot of pleasure to a lot of people.

12.01.2009 : Graham Andrews wrote Never met David but I spent 30 years on the paper - North Devon Journal - where he began his career. He never forgot his roots in Barnstaple. Of all sports presenters, David did his job with no airs or graces, no "celebrity" illusion and, from his expressive smile, it was clear he relished every moment in front of the mike.
His death came too early but he leaves a legacy of supreme stentorian delivery and utmost professionalism, the likes of which are fading fast these days!
12.01.2009 : stuart matthews wrote I met David in 1981 when I competed in BBC Superteams in Bath,he was a kind,generous man who seeing that this was my first appearance in Superstars events took me under his wing and helped me through the highly charged atmosphere of this wonderful competition.I met him and Ron Pickering on many occasions after that and he was the first to congratulate me on my 1983 Superstars win.David and Ron were the face of Superstars and the rest of us window dressing.I will remember him with warmth and affection and a great deal of respect.A wonderful human being who will be much missed...a part of my growing up.Thanks for letting me into your life David....Stuart Matthews.

A master of the commentator's art, so often misunderstood these days. Many pleasant memories remain of watching David on TV, especially Ski Sunday and the snooker. Condolences to his nearest and dearest, it really has the feel of "the end of an era" after yesterday's sad news.

He will be sadly missed by all my family. Its so nice to hear the memories you have of such a brilliant man. 14.01.2009 : RACHEL FENWICK wrote I, with my late husband Roy had the pleasure of working on two TV's shows with David and the late Eddie Wearing, the show was Play a Sport. We did two shows, one at Bracknell and the other at Milton Keynes. He was a real gentleman, kind and considerate. I gave up watching Ski Sunday when he left. He could cover all sports and make them enjoyable, his kind, sadly no longer work on TV and he will be missed.

A true Gent who really made his mark as a sporting commentator, I would really like to think a tributing memorial trophy in his honour will be announced and in a sport that he favoured most.

He was without a doubt one of the best tv presenters and, he will be a hard act to follow.

To me David Vine will be remembered as Mr Snooker, especially the times at the Crucible in Sheffield, he made the intervals during matches so entertaining, there were always funny bits set to music, shot of the championship, and snooker breaks where an expert would teach us the very technical points regarding playing snooker, he was always smiling, always well mannered and kind, I will miss him.

R.I.P. David, godbless to all his family, draw comfort from the fact that David was well loved, respected and admired, we will never forget him.

He was a fantastic, vibrant, life loving person, with a fantastic sense of humour! My thoughts go to his familly and hope you keep up the tradition. He will be sorely missed!

I was very sad to read David had died since I was abroad when the news came out and only Reg Gutteridge, yet another true professional, dying yesterday alerted me to the fact that David has passed away from us.
