Musician at the forefront of laidback Jamaican style
Lynn Taitt, one of the great Jamaican musicians, died on 20 January, 2010, aged 75.
A guitarist who played with many of the best known of his countrymen, he was at the forefront of developing the rocksteady sound.
His percussive style of playing was instrumental in establishing the laid back variation of ska favoured during hot summers.
As well being a prolific session musician, he headed up two bands, The Comets and The Jets, whose hits were among the first in the rocksteady style.
He also played on seminal rocksteady singles like Take It Easy by Hopeton Lewis, Girl I've Got a Date by Alton Ellis and Tougher Than Tough by Derrick Morgan.
In addition he recorded with the likes of Tommy McCook & the Skatalites , Desmond Dekker , Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Bob Marley , Johnny Nash and many more.
He emigrated to Canada in 1968 and continued to work in music as an arranger to other Jamaican émigré acts.
A documentary about his life and influence on rocksteady was filmed in 2006.
