01.03.2009 : John Parker wrote Geoffrey Smith was a lovely man who, through his numerous Mr Smith gardening series (particularly Mr Smith's Favourite Garden) and the passion he showed in them, turned gardening for me from a chore into a favourite hobby. I started corresponding with him last year and received many nice letters, all immaculately hand-written with a fountain pen, despite his apologies that he was "handier with a spade than a pen". I will treasure them.

I was not aware that he was ill so it was a great shock to hear the news yesterday. I had hoped to meet him this year but sadly that will never happen.

My sympathies go to his wife Marjorie and his family.

02.03.2009 : Anne Tucker wrote I remember watching Mr. Smiths Vegetable Garden on a Friday night as a teenager. He started a life long passion of growing vegetables. Not sure if my parents were as impressed when they returned home one day to find half of the back lawn removed, however they seemed to enjoy the vegetables! I still have my original copy of the book that accompanied the series although you can only just about see the picture on the front of Mr. Smith with his wheelbarrow of vegetables. I follow his 4 year rotation with onions in the same bed to build fertility. He has never failed me and I am sorry to hear of his death. My sympathy to his wife and family - treasure his memory.

03.03.2009 : florence keeton wrote I just loved to hear Geoffrey Smith on the television and radio. His voice was superb, and he was able to share his vast knowledge so eloquently. I remember hearing him talk at one of the first Gardeners World Live shows in Birmingham. He brought tears to my eyes, the way he talked about our wonderful English countryside and gardens. Long may he be remembered in our hearts and gardens.

20.03.2009 : malcolm shirley wrote I have only just found our about Geoffreys death. What a blow. He really inspired me through his various series of World of Flowers on TV.If only we could get those programmes on video? We are just about to plant a new rose bed and will now dedicate it to him.If only the BBC could make programmes like that now.
A quote of his was about cutting back heathers after they had flowered. "If you don't they'll look like a blow dried ferret". That was our Geoffrey...

25.03.2009 : Derek Wainwright wrote As a young man who had no interest in gardening whatsoever in his early twenties I watched a t.v. series called Mr.Smiths Favourite Garden. My interest was sparked by a man whose own enthusiasm came across so strongly that this apparently dull subject of gardening gripped me and made me an avid fan,so much so that years later I left the job I had done for 18 years to obtain horticultural qualifications and take up a career in gardening and landscaping.I am deeply saddened to hear of Geoffrey Smiths passing. His 'hands on' expertise and wit are irreplaceable and I for one thank him for his gift of my own life in gardening. My condolences to his wife and family. Derek

06.04.2009 : James Anderson wrote Some twenty years ago I wrote to Geoffrey to ask him for advice in establishing a newly-planted copper and green beech hedge. My amazement was great when I received a handwritten letter from him giving detailed instructions and the footnote - 'Beech is my favourite hedge.'
For my father and me, through his programmes he brought all the scents and flavours of the garden into our living-room. He remains my favourite TV and radio gardener, and I am saddened by his passing
