Tributes to accident victim who was due to marry

Motorcyclist Neil Petford, who died on 23 July, 2008, when his bike collided with a tractor, was weeks away from getting married.

The former policeman, of Northorpe, died at the scene on Kirton Road, Blyton.

It is understood Mr Petford used to work for Derbyshire Constabulary but left in 2004, and had recently become a welder.

He had written on an Internet forum:"My fiance has just passed her test and I've bought her a ZZR 600," he wrote. "Great first bike.

"We get married in August, and we're planning a honeymoon to the south of France two-up on my Z1000, but now she has passed she wants to ride as well, so the British Isles it is."

A keen biker and 'petrolhead', Mr Petford had been riding motorbikes since he was four years old, and said: "I will always have one."

Mr Petford had specially modified a Mitsubishi FTO to be his wedding car.

Another forum entry states: "Was all done for my good lady so we can leave the church in style on our wedding day."

His bike collided with a tractor and trailer full of hay, which caught alight.

Your Memories

My earliest memory of Neil was trips to Castleton on the bikes. A whole "crew" of us would travel out every Sunday. We kept in touch and have been through births, divorces, weddings and everything together. Neil helped us so much when we moved to Hope Valley, always there to lend a hand with the house or garden. I was so pleased he had found a new love and life in Lincolnshire... and can't believe what has happened. Our thoughts are with all his family at this time. Although when he moved to Lincolnshire we lost touch for a while, Neil will never be forgotten, how could you? He had the biggest smile and usually the loudest voice of us all. Love and miss you Neil, sorry we didn't see much of each other since your move.

*Huge hugs for Soph and your new family*

Racing the wind and the buzz of the speed
Those limits he knew he shouldn’t really exceed
The scorching wheels and the shining chrome
It won’t stop him from racing now that Heaven’s his home
So next time we hear thunder we’ll smile at the sky
“That’s Neil starting his bike – he was one hell of a guy!”

Neil always thought he was a big drinker but a few pints of guinuess and he was gone. I remember a night out in Castleton where he told me he was going to drink me under the table but by the end of the night the bar was propping him up!You will always be in my thoughts Neil and i'm sure you will be looking out for me just as much up there as you were down here.
