Footballer with Swansea Town

Former Swansea Town goalkeeper John Parry has died, aged 86, on Tuesday, January 19.

He made more than 100 appearances for the club between 1946 and 1951 before being signed by Ipswich Town for £750. From there he moved to Chelmsford City.

Born in Pontardawe, Ynystawe United aged 15 before being taken on by Swansea after a stint at Clydach United.

The keeper, known in Swansea as Jack, served an apprenticeship as a bricklayer, and returned to his trade in the London area after retiring as a professional footballer.

He was married to the late Mary. The couple had three daughters and several grandchildren.

His sister-in-law, Phyllis Haggar, said: "He didn’t smoke, he didn’t drink — he was a sportsman through and through. Until a couple of years ago he would play football with boys where he lived in Chelmsford."

Your Memories

When I was much younger I was a supporter of Chelmsford City Football Club and can remember 'Jack' Parry playing in goal. It was much later that I found out that he was to become my brother's father in law so a family connection was made. Rest in peace "Jack" sadly missed dennis poole — 27.01.2010
