'Happy go lucky' soldier about to become a father
Private Craig O'Donnell, who died in Afghanistan on 4 September, 2006, aged 24, was serving with B Company of The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 5th Battalion the Royal Regiment of Scotland.
Colleagues remembered his consistently positive attitude and total dedication to the company.
Craig O'Donnell came from Clydebank , Dunbartonshire, and wanted to join the Army from the age of four.
He fulfilled his dream and joined the The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in March, 2004. He completed tours in Bosnia (2005) and Kenya (2006) before deploying to Kabul in July, 2006, as part of the force protection team in Afghanistan .
On 4 September, 2006, Pte O'Donnell was on patrol in Kabul when he was killed in a suicide bomb attack. Another soldier was seriously injured in the attack.
Pte O'Donnell leaves behind his girlfriend Jessica, due to give birth to their first child in December, 2006.
His parents, Robert and Lorraine , said: "The family and all of Craig's friends were shocked and saddened to hear of his death during active service in Kabul, Afghanistan.
"He was a wonderful son who lived life to the full, and was an ardent fan of Celtic Football Club and the rock band Queen. He was a happy go lucky person who always put others first."
Commanding Officer Lt Col Simon West paid tribute to his colleague: "Private O'Donnell was a very positive young man, well liked by all his peers and with a very bright future ahead of him. He stood for all the right things in life and was a dedicated and professional Argyll soldier."
