Jimmy Murray

Footballer | 1935 - 2008

Top-scorer during Wolves’ dominance of the Football League in late ’50s

Jimmy Murray, who died on 27 September, 2008, aged 72, was a legendary striker for Wolverhampton Wanderers whose goals helped the club to two League Championships.

Murray was top scorer during both the triumphant 1957/58 and 1958/59 campaigns. He was also an FA Cup-winner thanks to a 3-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers in 1960.

During eight years at Molineux he scored 166 goals in 299 games before moving on to Manchester City, Walsall and Telford United.

Jimmy Murray was born on 11 October, 1935, in Dover. After being scouted by Wolves as a youngster he made his debut in November 1955 and quickly established himself in the first team with eleven goals by the end of the season.

His prolific scoring exploits over the coming years were a crucial factor in Wolves' back-to-back trophy successes and he made a huge contribution to their remarkable feat of scoring more than 100 goals in three years running. Under their revered manager Stan Cullis, the side also took on and beat some of the great teams in early European Cup games.

He left in November 1963 for a fee of just £27,000 as Wolves saw their fortunes decline. He helped Man City win promotion to the top flight in 1966. He ended his career with two-year spells at Third Division Walsall and non-league Telford, winning the FA Trophy with the latter in his final season.

After hanging up his boots he ran a greengrocers shop then a car hire firm, before retiring to Lichfield where he died after suffering from prostate cancer.

Peter Creed, secretary of the Wolves Former Players Association, paid tribute to him, saying: "Jimmy was a much admired member of the Former Players Association and our thoughts go out to his family. I saw him play and he was a great striker for Wolves who will be sadly missed."

Former team-mate George Showell said: "He always used to be in the right spot at the right time. He had wonderful anticipation. He was a very likeable man - very quiet."

Mr Murray was survived by his wife Anne, daughters Kim and Diane, and grandchildren James, 9, and Ellie, 8. Anne said: "Jimmy was a marvellous husband, father and grandfather."
