You were a real gentleman. Didn't nan call you "Gentleman Jim" I'm sure she will be looking after you now with grandad. I wish I had told you how proud I was of you, but we take so much for granted and are so busy getting on with our own lives. But you were often in my thoughts, I wish you had known that. My heart goes out to Shona and Meghan and your mum dad and David. You will never be forgotten Jonathan. Sleep well. With all my love Tracy Jack and Ben xxx

A journey that will take you to your loved ones. Never a more difficult time have I had until tonight. I said my farewells to you before I left the plane as you know. But words can't say how I feel. I just hope that Shona and the kids are able to look back and smile at the years you had together.
Your worries are gone for good, time to take your place next to the big guy up there!!!! You are and will be sadly missed mate.

05.08.2008 : Dave Shaw wrote I first met Jon in 1999 in Newtownhamilton, NI, where I was attached as the chef. I was a stranger amongst the well established and bonded Company with whom I was to spend 6 months. Jon went out of his way to bring me into the group, (as he did with many other younger members during his time. My enduring memory of Jon will always be one of not just a good humoured, kind and considerate fella, but an equally effective and focused Section Commander who was a shining example to those that he commanded. The respect that his soldiers had for him was truly earned and I have no doubt that he was just as effective and respected when he went on to be a Platoon Sergeant.
To Johns wife and family I offer my deepest condolencies and while nothing can return him to you, the memories and knowledge that he had such a positive effect on so many can be warmly treasured.
Goodbye Jon, rest well my friend.

17.09.2008 : John Taroni wrote I realise I'm behind the times but I just read about this in this issue of Soldier Mag. I worked with the Royals in Colchester, Ballykelly and Edinburgh as a Clerk and an Englishman. They were very hard times for me, but John was one of he few people that saw beyond race and career from the word go, in a difficult military environment for me. He was the friendly face, he was the guy who would listen, he was the guy that would look after the 'little guy'. he was a true gentleman in every aspect of the word.

This news upset a great deal and my deepest sympathies go to all his family and friends, you should all be VERY proud.

28.09.2008 : John Haldane wrote Jon.

I served with your Dad in the Royal Highland Fusiliers and was his RQMS Tech. I remember you when you were a yound lad when your Dad brought you into the QMs Dept I think it was when we were stationed in Cambridge. I no that he will be proud of you and its tragic that you were taken at such a young age. The old saying is that time is a great healer. God Bless and I am sure that the Big man in the sky is looking after you.

22.10.2008 : GARY WALLS wrote John was my training instructor at phase 1 in 2000 at Milton Bridge.
He was such a great guy to be around. Any of the young soldiers who had a problem or an issue with anything, army related or personal, Cpl Mathews was always ready to listen or give advice.

I have a video of my passing out parade (which was indoors because the snow was so bad) where John being John lead us into the gym so proud and smart and fell right on his backside in front of all the gasping friends and families (what a minter) LOL.
But give him his due, John got straight back to his feet and carried on with the parade, ego in tatters mind you!! LOL

Thats the last thing I remember about John, its a good memory to have of him, just a shame he never found out I done him proud and became a proud soldier just like him joining up with my regiment (Scots Guards) only a couple of months later.

I'm sure I speak for all the rest of the guys from Blenheim Platoon, C Coy, when I say you will be dearly missed John.

01.02.2009 : Bobby Buckner wrote I attended the International Long Range Reconnaissance and Patrol School with Jon in October of '98. 05.02.2009 : bryan langford wrote I remember the first time I met Jonathan, it was at my anty Marjory's house, it was a really nice day and Jon had come with Shauna (his wife, my cousin) to visit. With it being a nice day Jonathan decided it would be a great idea to take me and my 2 little cousins to Edinburgh Castle for the day. he used his military pass to get us all in for free and gave us a private tour of the castle, he was so pleased and happy and I am so glad that I will be able to remember you like that! i Will see you soon cousin! thank you. and I hope you will have the most peaceful rest till we meet again!

The greatest respect to you,
your cousin Bry.

17.03.2009 : susan chalk wrote England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They sleep beyond England’s foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.
