Clive! Or 'Arnie' as we all knew you at LAMDA 1969-72. Difficult to take it in really. Haven't been in touch in such a long time but still have some fantastic memories of the great time we had around Earl's Court and Notting Hill. There's so much more to recall but the shock prompts me to be brief and maybe return at a later date. And so, Arnie, I'm here to say farewell, not goodbye. Meet you on the other side

Actor best known as Emmerdale farmer Jack Sugden

Clive Hornby, the actor best known for playing cloth-capped farmer Jack Sugden in Emmerdale, died on 3 July, 2008, aged 63.

He had played the part since 1980 when he took over the role from Andrew Burt, making him the soap's longest-serving actor. He last appeared in February 2008 when illness forced him to take a break.

He had initially only been hired on a three-month contract to replace Mr Burt when Jack - one of the soap's original characters - returned from Italy where he had been living since the early 70s.

"I can't believe I'm still here sometimes," he said in a recent interview. "Some of the kids in the show weren't even born when I started."

Clive Hornby was born in Liverpool on 20 October, 1944. Before becoming an actor he had played the drums with the sixties beat group The Dennisons, about whom one DJ said "they've created the biggest impression on Merseyside since The Beatles".

The band played alongside The Beatles at the Cavern Club and released three singles, Come On Be My Girl, Walkin' The Dog and Nobody Like My Babe between 1963 and their split in 1966.

After leaving the group, he attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and worked on the rep circuit. His television roles outside Emmerdale included parts in episodes of Space 1999 and Minder.

During his 28 years on Emmerdale he became one of the soap's most popular, if unlucky, characters. He was shot at, accused of murder and lost two wives in tragic circumstances. His first big plot line was his 1982 marriage to childhood sweetheart and single mother Pat Merrick, whose son Jackie, it later transpired, was in fact Jack's.

Pat was played by Helen Weir who Mr Hornby married in real life. They were separated at the time of his death.

Emmerdale series producer Anita Turner was among the first to pay tribute to him, saying: "Clive will be greatly missed by everyone who has worked with him on Emmerdale during the past 28 years. He was a hugely popular and well-respected member of cast and a terrific actor."
