Multi-instrumentalist who founded folk revival leaders Steeleye Span

Tim Hart, a founder member of the folk revival outfit Steeleye Span, died on Christmas Eve, 2009, aged 61.

He was born in Lincolnshire but died in La Gomera in Spain's Canary Islands where he had lived since retiring from the music business.

Hart was a star of the 1960s folk scene in Britain, first gaining fame in a musical partnership with singer Maddy Prior in 1966.

The duo recorded two albums of traditional English folk songs with the versatile Hart backing their singing on guitar, mandolin, dulcimer, banjo and violin.

In 1971, Hart and Prior joined with Ashley Hutchings, who had left Fairport Convention, to form a new band.

The new project, at Hart's suggestion, was named Steeleye Span after a character in a Lincolnshire folk song, Horkstow Grange.

Steeleye Span went on to have chart hits with the Latin carol Gaudete, recorded a cappella in 1972, and nineteenth century song All Around My Hat which went into the top five in 1975.

Hart left Steeleye Span in 1983, but appeared at a charity concert with the group in 1995. His other work included two albums of nursery rhymes released in 1981 and being the unlikely producer of The Monochrome Set’s post-punk album Eligible Bachelors.

Your Memories

I'm sad to hear Tim has died. I knew his father and brother when I was young (his father was a vicar in St.Albans) and got to know Tim when I went to St.Albans School and was in the same year . A very rock'n'roll character, in 1963 he formed the first ever rock band at the school, playing blues and R&B classics. Given the "conservative" nature of the school ( founded 948AD next to St.Albans Abbey! ), this had enormous significance . I was amazed, hearing an amplified rock band for the first time. I think the band started off as the" Electrons", but they soon changed the name to a more funky " Rattfinks" . I have since been to reunions, everyone remembers Tim's music, and even those who went later know he was there. Incidentally, the school also produced several members of the Zombies, another hugely influential band.

When Tim became famous with Steeleye Span in the 70's, I never lost an opportunity to tell people that I knew him. Neither does my wife Christine, who actually sung Tim's arrangement of "Gaudete" in her Biggleswade church choir on Christmas Eve 2009, the day Tim died.

I was so sorry to hear of Tim's death, he was a friend in my early teens in St Albans. I can always remember him standing outside the St Saviour's in his grandfathers army boots shooting at the pigeons on the roof. He always missed tho.... He was a big part of my young life growing up CND marches, folk clubs and long, long debates on Saturday afternoons in Christopher's in French Row over a cup of coffee and long summer nights down the lakes, where sometimes we all would swim out to the island to drink wine and smoke. Rest In Peace Tim.. Condolences to Connie and the children... Eve. Eve Lim — 15.01.2010
Tim's voice is always with me and has always been from the first time I heard him in the early seventies. Rich, evocative, kind and cheeky.Gaudete.! Patricia Whitney — 14.02.2010
