Posthumously awarded the Queen's Commendation for Bravery

William Forth, a police sergeant with Northumbria Police, died on 21 March 1993, aged 34.

While investigating a disturbance and vandalism on a housing estate at Gateshead late at night, he was attacked by a man and a youth, beaten with staves and repeatedly stabbed in the chest and back and died soon afterwards.

A man of 25 and youth of 15 were convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment and detention at HM pleasure.

He was posthumously awarded the Queen's Commendation for Bravery.

Memorial Plaques were erected at Police Headquarters and a Police Memorial Trust stone placed near the scene.

Bill had more than 13 years police service and was stationed at Wickham near Gateshead; he had recently been commended by a Judge in relation to his actions at a firearms incident.

He was survived by his wife, a son aged 10 and daughter aged 7 years.
