11.10.2008 : Pincess Black FEARON wrote My first memoroy of Mr Rock Steay is on my fathers gram, where Muriel would be booming through the speakers in the house.The whole house had a vibes about it when Alton was playing, especially on a Saturday afternoon when soup was the order of the day. Mummy in the kitchen and Daddy round the gram playing selections. I can say, from my own experience, that Alton Ellis was an artiste in his own right, original and enchanting in his vocals, he will be greatly missed. My thoughts and condolences are with his immediate family at this time. I pray that his family can gain strength and much love from all well wishers. Alton, RIP FATHER!!!

12.10.2008 : Radcliffe Green wrote I vividly recall the days when my mother used to play her little battery radio and the sweet, melodious voice of Alton Ellis would come blaring throught the speakers. My ears would be greeted with loving and conscious lyrics, delivered by the most harmonious vocals you could ever hear.

I grew up admiring Alton Ellis from my very first encounter with his music to this very day. The man is admired internationally. He is one of Jamaica's great poineers of reggae music. I have the utmost respect and admiration for the Godfather of Rocksteady.

I had the wonderful privilege to see him in concert here in London some years ago, and I was truly mesmerized by his performance and personality. A humble but great man.

For me and many others, Alton Ellis will never die. His music and his memory lives on forever. Alton, my hero, was making music before I was born. His music and his legacy will prolong from generation to generation. Rest In peace my hero.
13.10.2008 : Junior Smith wrote Wow what a journey this great vocalist took us on. So much music so many memories so much vibes. There are many of his songs that when played it's like a church choir going on in the party as everyone just sings to his tunes. I recall the days of my youth in Jamaica especially on Fridays when the various shops would place a sound box wheter it be small medium or large outside their shop and belt out some tunes creating party and of course there was those great Alton vocals to be heard. Picture people with a guiness, dragon stout, red stripe etc in hand rocking away and when a Mr Ellis tune came on it was like an instant high and the dj had to rewind and rewind and probably rewind again.
At this time I think it only fitting to say THANKS for your legacy which will never die.
Mr Alton Ellis may you "REST IN PEACE".... GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN.
P.S. Can you imagine the party that's going on with all the late greats up in the skies right know. Alton, Dennis, Bob, Delroy etc must be kicking up a storm.

13.10.2008 : Pat Thomas wrote It's never easy to accept this sort of news, but it is a part of life. I will always remember Alton Ellis for the wonderful music he has sung during his lifetime. I grew up listening to his music on a regular basis because mum and dad were great fans of his. You could say he was a part of our household. Our Blue Spot Gram played Alton Ellis more times than I care to remember, especially on a Sunday whilst the dinner was being cooked.

My condolences to his family and friends and may God be with you all in this sad time. I will always keep his memory in my heart and I am sure you will too.

He has taken our music to parts of the world that have no experience of Black people, who love us simply because they appreiciated his specific sound & melodies that he sang through the years... He's also a very good friend of my father [blessings to all the original Trenchtown people], a regular visitor to our home over 30 years... I still don't know how to break the news to him (Papa Sledge) will miss him dearly. Alton was a person full of truth and light, he always saw the best in people. His friends know he suffered financially because of this, he sang from the heart & trusted that he would be paid. Lets hope that all his tributes are not just verbal and his royalties paid to his children who will miss him more than his friends and fans.. I pray the Love of Our Farther 'Jah' be with you all at this difficult time... His music lives on, he will sit at Jah Side,"the players of instruments and singers will be there".. A bright star to guide...

Many people hope to find details of his funeral via all media, so he can have the send off he deserves as a International musician... Respected around the world by many Nations. I personally know that Alton has a large following in China where he performed to large audiences long after the Jamaican, American and UK fans had deserted his style of Lovers Rock music for the Dancehall stuff.. He made me aware that the Chinese market was actually mimicking & reproducing reggae music to a level that if we are not careful, they will not need the Jamaicain music industry to provide Reggae music. Take note or as is said 'member' Alton Ellis,seh soh!!
He should also be made a national hero for promoting Reggae music across the world over 4 decades or more... Half a centery? That must be worth an Official Accalaid, I' sure the young princes have heard remake of "I'm Still in Love"- 'Dutty Love' and Danced!! A knighthood??

My brother got Coxsone's Blue Beat Special album when I was still in nappies, and I remember hearing "let him try" blasting out the gram. The music shaped my musical taste to this day. What a great loss to Jamaican music his passing is, but what a great legacy and body of work this man has left behind for future generations to absorb and appreciate. So for many of us Father Alton Ellis's music has had an everlasting and positive effect on our childhood up to this present day.Many of his songs have had relevants to our lifes and our social circumstances in which we encounter each day,we are truly fortunate and Ivileged to have recieved his Words Sounds and Powers.May Father Alton Ellis .

It is music like Altons that made connect with Jamaica - an island so near but yet so far and it is this music that I want to pass onto others. I saw him perform when I was younger and it left an indelible image in my mind of a time gone by when music was music and singers enjoyed their songs beyond the machine that the industry has become. This is when a man loved a woman and sang about it.. and you felt it.

Long may his music live on in the memories of the true reggae fans and lovers of the golden age of rock steady/ reggae.

I grew up with the music from this great man.I also had the pleasure and honour to working with him and to me for such a massive star he was so humble. He came to my home and first thing he did was remove his shoes at the door. I told him there was no need, but been the man he was he just said it was out of respect. The only other singer to come to my home and do that was Peter Hunnigale. I have a video and tape of that dance which i treasure.

Father Alton your music will live on foriver. Thank you for the joy your music brought. Raspect and Honour to you SIR. Friends like Winston Washington, King Sounds, Milton, King, Birchell, the Apollo Club in Willesden introduced me to tracks sung by Alton Ellis in the 1960s, and now 40 years on as a 'big woman', I am a DJ on Life FM playing Studio One and other oldies that remind me of those times.

Alton Ellis your music lives on in all of our hearts. Congratulations for leaving behind such an astounding legacy.

over again on my new record player,I still have it now.
My collection of the great mans music is now vast and is
played everyday in my cafe in Cornwall.

He was a man of peace and hated violence of any kind. When rock steady started to preach the rude boy culture he took himself away from it and sing about peace. He is one of a kind and is now with the other great singers and players of instruments. God bless him and his family.
