Veteran radio presenter and Liverpool FC match day announcer

Radio presenter and match day announcer for Liverpool FC, Phil Easton, died on 2 February, 2009, at the age of 59.

The veteran broadcaster suffered a brain haemorrhage shortly after presenting his breakfast show on Liverpool’s City Talk radio station.

Mr Easton worked with Radio City for more than 30 years and was one of the first presenters to join the station when it was launched in 1975.

He was also the first broadcaster to be heard on City Talk 105.9 when Liverpool’s all-talk station went on the air in January last year.

The presenter hosted the breakfast show with Kim Hughes and shortly before his death interviewed Prime Minister Gordon Brown when he visited Liverpool.

In his career, he also fronted the Magic FM breakfast programme and built up a loyal following with his pioneering show, The Great Easton Express, which ran for 12 years.

His voice was also familiar to thousands of football fans at Anfield who would hear his voice booming over the Tannoy system at games.

Your Memories

I used to listen to Phil back in the 80's when he was doing The Great Eastern Express.
The music and conversations from those Friday nights were a source of inspiration and much enjoyment throughout my formative years. A great broadcaster, genuine music fan and all round decent bloke.

I would just like to offer my deepest sympathy to Phil's family and friends. He was
lovely man and although I did not know him personally, he was always a part of my life through his many radio shows. I remember him most of all for the kindness he showed to my best friend Trish Butler on the great loss of her husband Joe who also worked at Radio City during the 70;'s and 80's. Both he and Mark Jones gave so much comfort to Trish. I shall never forget him. Such a great loss to broadcasting and Liverpool. May you rest in peace Phil. xx
