Witty expert on BBC’s ‘Gardeners’ Question Time’

Popular broadcaster John Cushnie, a regular Gardeners' Question Time panellist, died on New Year's Eve, 2009, aged 66.

He was an experienced landscape gardener who ran his own business and had featured on the BBC Radio 4 show for some 15 years.

He was also involved in projects on Radio 2 and Radio Ulster.

BBC Radio 4 controller Mark Damazer called him "a brilliantly knowledgeable panellist" who "laced every programme with warmth and joy".

He said: “His trademark acerbic wit was deployed with terrific timing against a wide variety of plants he did not like - and it was always done with an affectionate twinkle in his eye, with an exuberance of voice and with unrelenting sympathy for fellow gardeners."

Mr Cushnie also gave frequent talks on gardening across Northern Ireland and Britain and was a regular columnist for the Daily Telegraph's Saturday gardening supplement.

He contributed to a number of specialist publications and was a published author.

Your Memories

It’s New Year’s Day and the sun in shining on the light sprinkling of snow that fell overnight. Yesterday I was too busy for gardening but thought I may do some today if it ever stopped raining. Today is perfect winter-garden-checking weather but my heart just isn’t in it. Not since I heard that John Cushnie died.

He must have just started on Gardeners’ Question Time about the same time as I took up gardening seriously, rather than just herbs in pots. I liked him. He was funny. He was my favourite. Some panelists could be a bit po-faced about things. Others evangelistic. Some burst with enthusiasm. John was just staightforward and understated. “What do I do about this plant or that tree that’s not performing?” they would ask. Complex and labour/chemical-intensive answers came from the rest of the panel but John simply advised to dig it up, chuck it away and put something better in its place...
