Bob Crampsey

Glasgow | Died in 2008

Former Brain of Britain and retired head teacher Bob Crampsey, best known for his sports punditry in Scotland, died aged 78 on 27 July, 2008.

He began work at STV in the 1950s and has been a regular pundit on BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound as well as a contributor on TV’s Scotsport.

He was a football historian and edited a sports queries section in the Glasgow Evening Times until 2005.

He was also an author, writing several books on football, including a biography of Jock Stein and an official history of Queens Park Football Club.

His Brain of Britain triumph was in 1965 and he followed it up with a Mastermind semi-final appearance in 1973.

He was survived by his wife and four daughters.

Your Memories

I remember Bob for his contributions to Scotsport in my teens, and for the fact that he was the brother of Queens Park's goalkeeper Frank Crampsey.
On one occasion someone wrote into a local paper about Bob's diction, saying it sounded like he had 'marbles in his mouth.'
At the end of his next TV presentation he signed off by saying 'Good night from Bob (marble mouth) Crampsey' - it's nice when a man can laugh at himself.
Sad to see his passing.....
