Centre forward for Blackpool

Former Blackpool FC striker Ray Charnley, who was the club's top scorer for nine seasons, died on November 15, 2009, aged 74.

During his time at Bloomfield Road, he netted 222 goals in 407 appearances.

His career also took in stints at Morecambe, Preston and Wrexham, moving from Morecambe to Blackpool in 1957 for a fee of £750. He moved to Preston in 1967, before ending his playing days at Morecambe.

Friend and former team mate Jimmy Armfield told the BBC: "He was the old-fashioned centre- forward really.

"He was good in the air and he was no slouch on the ground with the ball either.

"He was a goal scorer, but his temperament was excellent too. Just a really super guy, who's been my friend for half a century."

Charnley won one England cap, against France.

Your Memories

I grew up watching Ray Charnley at Blackpool, he was a grafter who scored more than his share of goals. Watched him play in a win at Maine Road against City where he had a great game.
Thought are for his friends and family, I will remember him with much affection.
Under rated player and a genuinely nice man.

As a regular Koppite during the 60's at Bloomfield Road, I came to love Ray's style and comittment to the game and 'Pool. Always on the prowl in the penalty area he was magnificent in the air, I always remember how proud it felt when he at last got some recognition and was picked for England, along with Jim Armfield and Tony Waiters. Thanks Ray for some super goals and a true sportsman the like of which is hard to find these days. A brilliant servant to Blackpool and football. Mike Turner — 30.11.2009
