Mr Carmichael's father, Arthur, started Hull department store Carmichaels in 1902 with his brothers.

The shop, in George Street, city centre began by selling jewellery but expanded the range of goods to include glassware and quality china.

David Alexander, 70, of north Hull, said: "Carmichaels was known as the Harrods of Hull, it was a very posh shop."

16.02.2010 : Cynthia Morgan wrote A fine comedy actor who I have admired all my life. Just to look at him in a comedy film made me laugh, handsome, articulate and charming. It was a pleasure to see him in The Royal, a serious role for once, but he still had that twinkle in his eye. My condolences to his wife and children, I am sure he will be sadly missed.
