Television news reporter for fledgling ITN and MP for Gravesend

Former newsreader and politician Tim Brinton died on 22 March, 2009 aged 79.

He was known for being one of the first television newsreaders on ITN after it was founded in 1955.

Previously he had worked for BBC Radio.

He enjoyed a varied journalistic career, presenting documentary features, interviewing the Shah of Iran and becoming the first nude news reporter on television during an item about Turkish baths.

He retired from broadcasting in the 1970s and moved into politics, being elected to Kent County Council in 1975 and then winning the parliamentary seat for Gravesend for the Conservatives in the 1979 general election.

He left the House of Commons in 1987 and returned to media work, setting up a broadcasting consultancy which trained businessmen and politicians for television and radio appearances.

Mr Brinton was married twice and had six children. He lived in Kent. His widow Jeanne said: "Tim will be missed by his many fans all over the country, who will feel they have lost a personal friend. The children, grandchildren and I deeply mourn his death."

Your Memories

So sorry Meg, I know how fond of him you were. David Coomber — 25.03.2009
Tim was my brother-in-law; he was a fascinating person to talk to, with so many experiences that produced a fund of amusing and insightful stories. He thought the world of his family, and loved my sister very much. I shall miss him, so will my husband, daughter and son-in-law. It was a shame that he didn't meet his great-niece, but we will tell her all about her Great Uncle Tim.
Edwina.
