What is Lasting Tribute?

Lasting Tribute is dedicated to celebrating the lives of those no longer with us by allowing you to pay tribute to family, friends and people in the public eye.

As part of the Daily Mail and General Trust Group plc ( DMGT), we are the trusted guardians of the largest and fastest growing online archive of tributes in the UK.

The site contains almost one million searchable bereavement and in memoriam notices previously published in our Northcliffe Media Group's newspapers. More than 3,500 new tributes are being added every week.

The site also contains more than 5,200 featured tributes to people in the public eye — nationally and locally — who have died since 1950. This searchable database includes British soldiers who have died in recent military conflicts and police officers killed in the line of duty.

Who runs Lasting Tribute?

The site is run by Associated Northcliffe Digital, a sister company of Northcliffe Media Ltd. Both companies are part of the Daily Mail and General Trust plc which publishes the Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday, Metro and numerous other regional newspapers. Lasting Tribute is managed by our team based in Derby, England.

What can I do on the site?

  • You can browse the site and search for bereavement and in memoriam notices, as well as featured tributes and tributes created by users. You do not have to register or sign in to do this.
  • Once registered and signed in you can add memories and images to any tributes on the site
  • You can start a new tribute to someone not already on the site.

Why are newspaper notices on Lasting Tribute?

In recent years, whenever anyone has paid to have a bereavement or in memoriam notice published in one of Northcliffe Media’s newspapers the price has also automatically covered inclusion on one of its websites. All of these notices now appear on Lasting Tribute.

What does it cost to use Lasting Tribute?

We make no charge for browsing and searching the site, and adding memories and images to existing tributes.

Starting a basic tribute is also free. This allows you to write a maximum of 200 words and add up to three images.

If you wish to write more than that and add more images, you can opt to create a full tribute. For details see benefits of a full tribute.

Lasting Tribute is unique because our team checks every memory, image and tribute before it is allowed on the site. We believe this is vitally important to ensure that the site is an appropriate place for your tribute.

We also pride ourselves on responding quickly and sensitively to your questions and requests for help.

The running costs for Lasting Tribute have to be covered. If you choose to create a full tribute we are happy for you to pay whatever you think the service is worth. The amount you choose to pay, even if you decide to pay nothing, will not make a difference to the service you receive.

Whatever amount you choose, it will be a one-off payment.

How do I add an image?

Make sure that you have registered and are signed in.

  • Use the search box to find the name of the person on whose tribute page you want to add an image. Click on the link that says "Add an image".
  • Browse for the image you want to upload. Images must be smaller than two megabytes ( MB) in file size. The best type of image file to upload to the site is a JPEG (with a file extension .jpg or .jpeg) but we also allow the following types to be uploaded:

What is a "Captcha code" and why do I need to enter one?

On the "Contact Us" and "Register" pages we ask you to type in the letters in the displayed picture before you send us your details. This is known as a "Captcha code". By entering the letters you see in the picture, you are helping us confirm that a person, rather than an automated program, is trying to access the site. This will help us prevent automated programs from affecting the performance of Lasting Tribute services for you.

Why is my memory/image/tribute awaiting approval?

Very occasionally a memory, image or tribute is submitted that we feel is inappropriate. Therefore, the Lasting Tribute team checks all content before it is made live on the site. We will let you know by email when your memory, image or tribute has been approved.

When we feel that content is inappropriate and could potentially cause distress to others, it will not be put on the site. We will send an email to the person who sent it to explain our reasons.

I don't agree with the inclusion of a memory or an image. Is there anything that I can do?

Yes. You can request that we remove any memory or image that you feel is inappropriate. For a memory, click the "Request removal" link that appears after the memory and complete the requested information before clicking "Confirm". To object to an image go to the "Contact us" page and let us know which image you object to and why.

We are committed to considering all such requests thoughtfully and sensitively on a case–by–case basis. Please consider the feelings of others when submitting memories or images.

Can I get a bereavement or in memoriam notice taken off the site?

Whoever paid for the original newspaper notice should have been told at the time that it would also appear online. We do, however, realise that some notices are placed directly by funeral directors.

If your family feels strongly that a notice should be removed from the site, let us know. You can do this by emailing us the details, including first name and surname, through the "Contact us" option on the navigation bar. It would also be helpful to include a link to the actual page to which you are referring.

We will consider all such requests carefully.

You can contact us by clicking here.

Can I get a tribute taken of the site?

If you object to a tribute that has been created and published on Lasting Tribute, let us know by using the "Contact us" option on the navigation bar. We will consider all such objections carefully.

You can contact us by clicking here.

What dates are displayed on the site?

  • On featured tributes, the date displayed is always the date when that person died.
  • For notices taken from our sister newspapers, the date when someone died is included if it appears in the notice. If the date is not given we publish the date when that notice was published in a newspaper.
  • For in memoriams — notices from our newspapers which remember loved ones some time after their death — the date shown is always when it was published in a newspaper.
  • On basic and full tributes the year of death is shown where this has been provided.

What is "My tributes"?

The My tributes section of this site enables you to see at a glance a list of any tributes you have created on this site, without having to search for each one. There is no limit to how many tributes you can create but you must register first — this is free to do — and then sign in and click on My tributes in the top right–hand corner. If you haven’t created a tribute yet, click the link to get started.

  • You can also upgrade any basic tributes that you have created from here. Clicking "upgrade" will allow you to upgrade the selected record to a full tribute.
  • You can view the payment details for any full tributes that you have created. Click on the "view payments" link and the page displayed shows the amount paid for each tribute. Please quote the reference number if you have any query regarding payment for a full tribute.
  • If you have tried to create a full tribute and your payment has been unsuccessful, your tribute will not be published but will be saved to this section with a status of draft. This has been designed to make it easier for you to pay for your tribute later. The tribute details that you entered will be saved up to the step before the payment process. You can continue the creation of your full tribute by selecting "review" at any time.

Click on the link to create a tribute

  1. Select "Create a tribute" from the navigation bar, or click the "Begin" button on the Lasting Tribute home page.

  2. Choose "Begin" for option one.
  3. Complete the "Basic tribute details" page, ensuring you complete all fields marked with an asterisk. Ideally, you should enter the exact date of death of the person for whom you are creating a tribute. If you don’t know the precise date, don’t worry, just give an approximate one as you can change this later.
  4. Click "next"
    • If you have not already done so, we will search and show you any tributes for people with similar name details to those entered, seven days either side of the date of death that you entered.
    • If no similar tributes have been found, you will skip step 5.
  5. The "matching tributes" page will give you the option to continue with creating a tribute or to add your memories and images to any of the tributes already on the site that have been returned in the list. This will save you creating a new tribute if one already exists. If you wish to continue creating a new tribute, click "next".
  6. The next page displayed depends on whether you have already signed in. If you have, go to step 7.
    • The "register/sign-in" page is shown.

We recommend you read and fully understand these before ticking the "I hereby confirm that I have read and accept the terms and conditions of the site" box at the base of the form. If I am under 16, I confirm that I have the consent of a parent or guardian to register. Click "Next."
  7. The "tribute details" page is shown. Complete the form, making sure you have filled in all fields marked with an asterisk.
    • For "their date of death" please be as accurate as possible as these details will be displayed on your new tribute.
    • For "location where the person lived", we recommend that you enter just one place. This could be the place where the person is best known, lived the longest, or where they lived last.
    • "Write your tribute" allows you to provide a summary of the person’s life. This is limited to 200 words and will appear in a prominent position on the tribute when it has been approved.
  8. Click "next". You will be asked to confirm that the details you have provided for your new tribute are correct. You have the option to click "back" to change any tribute information, or click "submit" to submit the tribute details.
  9. Click "Submit". The Tribute created confirmation page is shown. The details provided for creating your new tribute will be sent to the Lasting Tribute team for approval.

After your tribute has been approved it will be visible on the site. You can click "Go to your tribute " to add your memories and up to three images to your new tribute prior to it being approved.

We will also send you an email containing a link to your tributes. Before approval your new tribute can be seen by you but not others.

Submitted memories and images will also not be displayed until they have been approved. We will contact you by email to inform you when this has been done.

    • You will need to confirm that you agree that you have read and accept the e–commerce terms and conditions before progressing.

You can continue with payment at any time by clicking "review" on the appropriate record. Any tributes that you try to create where there has been a problem with the payment can be identified on the "My Tributes" page as they will have a status of "draft".
